Acupuncture and Pain
One of the main reasons people seek acupuncture care is for pain relief. Neck, back, and hip pain are some of the most commonly treated symptoms with acupuncture. It’s a gentle, non-invasive modality of treatment with big benefits. And it even comes with the opportunity for a nice little nap on the table during the session!
Pregnancy Pains
Some women experience pain in the low back, legs, pelvis, or wrist during pregnancy. Usually these symptoms start to creep in during the second and third trimester as the baby grows and pushes on the bones and ligaments and nerves in the pelvis. Wrist pain in pregnancy is often due to the increased blood volume which causes the vessels in the wrist to swell and press on the median nerve. While doctors say that taking acetaminophen for pain in pregnancy is safe, many women want to avoid taking pain killers and look for alternative ways to get some relief.
Acupuncture Can Help
Acupuncture is very safe in pregnancy. A licensed acupuncture practitioner that is well-versed in treating pregnant women will know which points to use and which to avoid for a safe and effective treatment. Most of the time it is recommended to receive weekly to twice weekly treatments depending on the severity of the pain. Several studies (see links below) have also shown the significant benefit of acupuncture for low back and pelvic pain in pregnancy.
Acupuncture at the end of the third trimester is also great for prepping the body for labor. Points are chosen to gently relax the pelvic girdle and allow baby to get into best position. In addition, treatments help to relax the mind and de-stress the whole body in preparation for the delivery. Treatments generally start around 36 or 37 weeks and continue throughout the end of the pregnancy. Women who receive regular acupuncture treatments in the month before delivery often report and shorter and less painful labor as well!
