TCM and Winter – Part Two: The Bladder Channel

The Bladder is the yang partner to the Kidney and plays a powerful role in protecting the body from cold and external stressors. If the Kidney stores our deepest energy, the Bladder helps regulate and distribute it throughout the body. Winter’s cold energy can easily invade the body, especially through the back of the neck and lower back. The Bladder channel, which runs along the entire back body, acts as a protective shield against cold and environmental stress. It governs: fluid metabolism, nervous system regulation, the body’s stress response, and muscular tension along the back.

The Bladder channel begins at the inner corner of the eye. It travels over the head and down the back of the neck. It runs in two parallel lines down the back, alongside the spine and passes through the lower back and sacrum. It continues down the back of the leg, through the hamstring and calf, and then travels behind the outer ankle. The channel ends at the outer side of the little toe.

❤️ When the Bladder is in Balance:

  • Strong immune defense against colds
  • Flexible spine and relaxed back muscles
  • Sets good limits and boundaries
  • Healthy urination
  • Emotional resilience under stress

❌ When the Bladder is Out of Balance:

  • Sciatic pain, neck or back tension
  • Dehydration or water retention
  • Frequent urination or urinary discomfort
  • Holds grudges
  • Feeling tense, overwhelmed, or fearful

💡 Ways to Support the Bladder Channel:

  • Keep your neck and lower back covered in cold weather
  • Use heat therapy on tight back muscles
  • Stretch the hamstrings and calves
  • Stay hydrated with warm fluids
  • Schedule restorative bodywork or acupuncture

✋ Key Acupuncture Points for the Bladder:
