Summer In TCM – PART 1: The Heart Channel

Part 1: The Heart Channel

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Summer is associated with the Heart, known as the “Emperor” of the body. It governs blood circulation, mental clarity, sleep, and emotions- particularly joy.

The Heart channel starts in the Heart and travels down the inside of the upper arm along the medial (inner) side. It continues along the inner elbow crease and passes down the forearm along the inner, pinky-finger side. It crosses the wrist crease, and follows the inner edge of the palm to the tip of the little finger, where it connects with the Small Intestine channel.

🌞Why Summer Relates to the Heart

Summer is full of yang energy—warm, bright, and active. This energy supports Heart function but can also overwhelm it if we’re not careful.

❤️ When the Heart is in Balance:

  • You feel joyful, calm, and emotionally steady
  • You sleep well and wake refreshed
  • You have a clear mind and strong memory
  • Your complexion appears rosy and healthy

When the Heart is Out of Balance:

  • Anxiety, restlessness, or panic
  • Insomnia or vivid, disturbing dreams
  • Forgetfulness or scattered thoughts
  • Palpitations or chest discomfort

💡 Heart-Supporting Summer Tips:

  • Follow natural light: early to bed, early to rise.
  • Eat cooling foods (cucumber, watermelon, mint).
  • Spend time in uplifting, calm environments.
  • Practice breathwork or gentle meditation to cool the spirit.

Acupressure Point To Try:

Gently massage for 1–2 minutes on each wrist, especially at bedtime.

Heart 7 (Shenmen – “Spirit Gate”)

  • Location: On the inner wrist crease, under the pinky finger.
  • Benefits: Calms the Shen (spirit), supports restful sleep, eases emotional tension.
