Stay Cozy with a Hot Cup of Tea this Winter

Brrr!  This sure has been a cold winter so far this year.  I know when I want to warm up, I like to grab a cozy blanket, a good book, and a nice hot cup of tea.  Unless you are already a big tea drinker and have favorite types, it can be a bit overwhelming to see all of the choices at the store.  Here are a few popular kinds of tea, and some of the benefits they provide:

1.       Green Tea – This popular tea has tons of great benefits including its ability to regulate blood sugar and increase metabolism.  In addition it has strong antioxidant, antibiotic, antiviral properties, and more!  It also has a mild flavor that most people like.

2.       Ginger Tea – This tasty tea is known for its ability to soothe the stomach from nausea or indigestion.  It’s also warming- so even better on a chilly day.  You can even make your own by slicing raw ginger and letting it steep in a cup of hot water.

3.       Chamomile Tea – Known for its calming effects, this tea can help with symptoms of anxiety, depression, and insomnia.  It also helps to relax cramping muscles- including menstrual cramps.

4.       Peppermint Tea – This is a great tea for stomach issues like bloating and gas.  It can also suppress appetite, and is helpful with weight loss.  Try drinking a cup after dinner to give yourself a healthy “sweet” drink instead of a rich dessert.  An added bonus:  peppermint can also open up your sinuses if you are feeling stuffy!

5.       Rooibos Tea – Another antioxidant-packed tea, rooibos is said to help prevent Alzheimer’s and some cancers.  It also contains lots of health-promoting minerals including:  calcium, magnesium, manganese, iron, and zinc.  In addition this tea can improve circulation in the body.

There are plenty of other great teas out there too.  Fruit teas are generally caffeine free and are tasty and sweet without adding any sugar.  Black tea can be a great alternative to coffee if you are trying to cut back on caffeine as it has more than most teas, but still less than coffee.  Try starting with one of the teas above or pick something else out that sounds good to you.  You really can’t go wrong with a good cup of tea!
